"Kerala Saar… Get well soon saar!" – Malayalis roast comedian Jaspreet Singh over ‘India's Got Latent’ controversy
Hey everyone, Recently, many of us have seen that video from India's Got Latent where a guy mocked Kerala, saying, "Kerala saaar... 100% literacy saaaar..."
As a Mallu, I would like to respond to this. Kerala has the highest literacy rate compared to the rest of India. Let's evaluate how this impacts socioeconomic factors, improves people's lives, and contributes to building a strong societal framework for a better livelihood.

First of all, as God’s Own Country, we keep God out of the equation during elections. Yes, we cast our vote—we don’t vote our caste.
In Kerala, you can see a temple sharing its border with a mosque or a church, with all religions coexisting peacefully without causing problems for one another.
Having a high literacy rate helps in many ways, which is why we prioritize education over many other things. It’s also why we prioritize humans over cows. In a country where cows have dedicated ambulance services while a tax-paying citizen is forced to carry the body of a loved one on a bicycle,(Referring that incident happened in UP) such incidents don’t happen in Kerala.
In Kerala, we not only respect personal space and religious beliefs, but we also don’t interfere in other people’s lives. We don’t kill anyone because they eat beef!
During Ramadan, non-Muslim friends gather at their Muslim friends' homes and celebrate Ramadan together. During Onam, Muslims and Christians join in the festivities, and at Christmas, it’s not just Christians—everyone, regardless of religion, comes together to celebrate.
Not just in the religious context, but in all areas of life, these reflections can be seen. Let's take cinema.
Have you seen the notion on a national level where everyone is looking at Malayalam cinema? Film critics, film fraternity members, and, above all, the viewers. The reason for the same is the quality of content we produce.
The production quality is so good because we don't cherish meaningless, senseless action or romance-template films like what they produce up north, Exceptional cases are there like Laapataa Ladies and all but in general you know what bollywood is. Even though we are a small industry with a minimal budget compared to Bollywood, we don't appreciate movies that are meaningless. No wonder why Shahid Kapoor while promoting Deva he said my Director is from Malayalam! Any wonder why Sushant Singh Rajput was alienated among those Nepo kids who only open their mouths to gossip and spill filth?
Imagine you have two restaurants in your town—one provides cheap-quality food, while the other produces good-quality food, and there are two sets of people who consume those. The value proportion each group finds depends on the value they keep inside, and literally, literacy is an inevitable facet that contributes greatly to adding values to societal frameworks.
Having said all this, Kerala isn’t a land where everything is perfect—there are certainly many flaws. But after watching India’s Got Latent, this is what I felt like sharing.
